Seems like a writing error on the author's part to give some forced misfortune, same with the company-stocks thing given it seemed like we had an MC with a head on his shoulders; actually it's a waste of time and opportunity. Time because we spent time developing on the fact the MC had stocks which could have amounted to something down the line in the story; opportunity because then the writer had a chance to make the girls screw up and the cafe wouldn't just go down the toilet immediately. In reality, one mess up before some real profits can be made would not only send the cafe down the ringer, but would also leave them all homeless because they won't have the funds to pay the property taxes nor the bills; all because somebody forgot to put their laptop away.
